Are Essential Oils Beneficial to our Health and Well-being?

What are essential oils?

Have you ever wandered why so many people are using essential oils these days? Some are just attracted to the scent of certain oils in skin care products or use in a diffuser to fragrance the home but there is so much more to essential oils.

The healing power of plants is one of natures precious gifts to us but not something that most people consider in relation to their health and well-being. Our ancient ancestors had a deeper understanding of the healing power of the plants and how to use them, where as today we tend to look to modern medicine for all our needs.

Essential oils are compounds which are extracted from plants to capture their flavours and scents (essence), and overall beneficial properties. Unique aromatic compounds give each essential oil its characteristic essence. The essential oil is found in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or fruits of most plants. There are many different essential oils and many ways that they can be used to boost our well-being.

What are the benefits of essential oils?

Essential oils can have a profound effect on the deepest levels of the mind, body and spirit, as well as increasing our ability to stay healthy but only if we use the purist version of the oils and not synthetic fragrance. Many oils can be of benefit to our skin, hair, and healthcare. Some oils create an environment that bacteria find inhospitable. They can enhance positive mental and emotional states helping with stress, anxiety and depression, promote relaxation and sleep, help the respiratory system, some help heal skin conditions, or can help relieve pain. An aromatherapist will have a knowledge of which oils to use to address specific issues relating to your health and wellness. Essential oils are very beneficial when used for aromatherapy.
