10 Easy Health Habits to Boost your Immune System Naturally

Updated: Oct 21, 2020

How can you boost your immune system naturally?

During the cooler Autumn and Winter months it is always a good idea to do everything you can to give your immune system a boost to prevent colds and flu. During a pandemic that mostly affects people with immunity problems this is even more important and it makes sense to take some extra measures to boost your immune system as well as your mental and physical health in general. Below are some useful ways of boosting your immune system and preventing illness naturally:

Make nutrition a priority - buy nutrient-rich foods

Making nutrition a priority is something that you need to constantly pay attention to to ensure everyone in your household is eating a healthy balanced diet. Focus on food that you normally eat if you are already eating well. If you are not, then maybe now is the time to start doing so and avoid overstocking on high carb food. Nutrient-rich foods such as beans or lentils, whole wheat foods, and foods high in fiber should be on your shopping list. The best thing about such foods is that they can be prepared in various ways and they can be mixed with other foods so you get the complete nutritional benefits as well.

Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of high-nutrient foods that will keep you healthy during cold and flu season and especially during a pandemic. Foods such as red bell peppers, broccoli, spinach, ginger, garlic, onions, citrus fruits, papaya and kiwi are known immunity boosters. Ensure you are washing your fresh fruits and vegetables in water. No need to use sanitisers!

stay hydrated to stay healthy
Drink plenty of water

Stay Hydrated

Drinking lots of water will keep your body hydrated and will drain any accumulation of bacteria or viruses in your mouth or throat. Avoid drinking sugared or soda drinks- the sugar will only contribute in dehydrating your body and contribute to weight gain.

Avoid over indulging in alcohol

As tempting as it may be to reach for that extra glass of wine to help you relax after a stressful day, or unwind with a few beers, keep a limit on the amount you consume. Alcohol in excess can lower your immune system making you more susceptible to viruses. Plus the hangover is not worth it!

Make regular hand washing a priority

Maintain good hygiene

Washing your hands thoroughly and staying clean in general is a great way of ensuring perfect health. You are advised to wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap or using an alcohol-based sanitizer. Staying clean also involves focusing on keeping your house clean and getting rid of clutter. Make sure you emphasize cleanliness to your kids and get them to help clean up their rooms.

Avoid physical contact or touching your face

Health professionals advise that you should avoid touching your face during an infection outbreak. Touching your face can lead to major infections or the spread of viruses and bacteria which can affect your immune system. Minimize contact with others as well to prevent risks of contamination.

Get plenty of Exercise

This can be going for a run, bike ride or walk outdoors - anything that gets you moving is beneficial. Exercising from home is also a great way of staying healthy during times when infection rates are high. When you are physically fit, the mind is also fit, and this plays a huge role in your ability to stay healthy. Remember to stay hydrated throughout your exercise routine. Practices like Yoga, Thai chi and Qigong are also very beneficial.

Quality sleep

With so much negative news around, and life problems in general it is easy to stay awake, worrying about what could happen. Remember that sleep is essential to help the body restore and regenerate itself. So try to sleep at a decent time with at least 7 hours of good quality sleep. You will wake up feeling rested and to face the challenging day. Free sleep guide here https://www.lincsholisticwellness.com/sleep-support

Natural supplements

Natural supplements have proved time and time again to be effective in boosting the immune system. Natural supplements like ginger, essential oils, lavender, coriander and more have proven healing and immunity boosting properties. Vitamins also help to supplement the body’s daily vitamins and minerals intake and prevent you from easily catching infection and falling ill.

Keep track of your health

Another way to stay on top of your immunity is by tracking your vital health signs. Following simple things like body temperature and blood pressure can help you stay on top of the situation and seek care on time instead of waiting until you have been affected by an infection. Also ensure you maintain a healthy weight.

Stay safe and virus free!
